Tool Functional Mathematics Tests

Summary

These two tests provide a range of exemplar tasks in 'functional mathematics'. Each shows an everyday life problem - mathematically literate people will use mathematics to understand it better. There is a short commentary on each problem.

The first test is aimed at well-educated adults - someone with a BA majoring in a non-mathematical subject like English or Social Studies, for example. The second test is designed for school students around Grades 8-10. The tests show through exemplar tasks what is meant by "Functional Mathematics (also called Mathematical Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, Numeracy). See also PISA
